the noise is common. i believe its actually in the diff or the driveline somewhere. its especially noticable in the 80+ mph speeds. like a high pitched whine.... its been talked about before here several times. i have owned two 323ci's and they both did it, one was 5spd, one step. Its anoying but don't worry bout it unless it gets really loud...
