guys,
i'm going down the shore this weekend with some friends and i can't decide whether or not to take my new bimmer or my old car. its supposed to rain and i'm really anal about having people inside the car since its so new and getting it all dirty.

what should i do? Am I completely abnormal?

The best thing to do with any new car, if you are being too obsessed with it, is to take a small ball peen hammer and put a small ding in the location of your choice and leave it there. This way, the cherry is popped, so to speak, and you can get on with your life.

I bought a new Porsche 944 in 1986, and it came with a small ding and about a 2" scratch in the passenger side front fender. I obsessed over the issue of painting the entire fender under warranty at the dealer's selected body shop, or living with the damage and keeping the rest of the paint on the fender as OEM. After much consulting, I chose the latter, and it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I didn't have to wait for the other shoe to drop, and I could just enjoy the car.

OK, the ball peen hammer thing is a bit much, but the concept is valid. Drive the car to the shore and everywhere else and use it and get it dirty and get your first stone chips in it, then the anal side of you will calm down, and you will be able to relax.
