light comes on when switiching car off so.... (archive)

from what i can remember (don't have the manual in front of me) it means check oil level... it does not come on while driving though, only when the car is switched off and the light is yellow, not red. I checked the oil level and it was well and truly very very empty! What concerns me is that the dealer always tells me when i request for a service i that i am wasting my money changing the filter so early!!! but still not convinced that as a brand new engine the first filter can last so long.

nonetheless, they topped it up free of charge, perhaps the situation was a little bit unusual (As the level was well and truly below the dipstick minimum mark)

BMW says that I will have to pay for the oil top up, but surely if a top up is needed already then potentially it was not full to start with?
