Starting June 2000, BMW started fitting 330 and 325 cars with what has been called "overboosted" steering. The original idea was that it was going to help make parking easier. Critics say that the overboosted steering kills the road feel and high speed stability of the car by making the car hypersensitive to small steering angle changes. One popular analogy is calling it very "Buick like".

Starting in 2001, BMW started offering a "retrofit" service to owners that are complaining about the steering. Those with overboosted steering have the option to have their car fitted with a much tighter steering. This involves replacing the entire steering rack and associated components and a realignment (approx $1000-$1400). BMW picks up the bill.

To get the retrofit, people must contact BMW NA, and be put on a wait list. Each case is reviewed for eligibility, and then the owner can select a service center of their choice for the retrofit. The retrofit itself takes a few hours. Some people waited only a few weeks for the parts to arrive at the service center. Some have waited MONTHS.

Starting either in April or May, BMW is returning to a tighter steering.
