The lower the ratio, the harder the engine has to work. This also puts strain on your drive shafts, clutch and differentials.

When I had to switch over my drive shaft when I upgraded my diff to 3.9 from a 3.45, the drive shaft had actually warped into an oval shape. It was no longer circular.

By putting a high diff ratio, it increases the car's torque and it allows the car to get off the mark easier. It will actually reduce your top speed, but who really travels that fast anyways?
