I have the same noise - I think it is the belt tensioner bearing or something. As you say, it comes and goes. I've yet to take it to the dealer....

When cold, my car makes a mouse-like chirpy squeaking noise from the engine compartment. It's hard to pinpoint, but sounds like it's coming from the alternator. I just know the service people are not going to find anything wrong as usual. Any ideas?
