A question for anyone with a E46 (all of u!) (m) (archive)

My friend brought over his 2000 328i 5-Spd and in the rear left (if you are standing if front of the car) of the engine compartment he has a metal box that says "DSC" on it. It has like 8 metal wires running out of it. My 2001 325i Step doesn't have it. Why?
