I've heard that theres no sales tax on used vehicles sold by private parties, but you have to pay the full 8% sales tax if you buy a used vehicle from a dealer? Is this true?


I just moved to the bay area of California, does anyone know how the sales/use tax applies to used vehicles purchased from a private party?


Even when you buy a car from a private party, you have to pay the sales tax on the transaction amount.

So, if you bought a car from someone for 10K, you will have to pay $800 in sales tax + dmv fees.
