The school I went through had similar setup - no helmets for rent. But their "supplier" was hugely overpriced and only had Bell helmets. Bell did not fit my head properly. I went with Bieffe instead.

Getting your own helmet is a great thing. One will last you at least 10 years (SA2000), unless you crack it. It is also more hygenic - you only suffer your own sweat. :)

Get one that has removable liner, so that you can wash it from time to time.

I look at a helmet as a long term investment. If it lasts me 10 years - $400 helmet comes to ~40/year then. Considering that the usual AutoX rent-a-helmet is around $15 per session, having your own is not such a bad idea if you plan to attend the events several times a year.
