The general rule of thumb is that you want a narrower tire for the winter. The contact patch is smaller and the weight of the car is distributed over a smaller area which allows the tire to bite through the snow easier. A wider tire will tend to float more on top of the snow. The standard setup for winter would be to go with a 17x7 wheel and 205/50/17 snow tires.

There is someone on the board that is going to try what you described in Philly I think. I'm thinking about 225's all around for winter but I'll also have an xi. I've got the M-wheels for summer. Depends a lot on how much driving you need to do in the winter.
