If you order leather, the ENTIRE seat and headrest is leather besides the hard plastic back panel. Same thing with the door panels; underneath they are leatherette, but what you see and feel is all leather.

Right after I got my 2000 328i, one of the seat heating elements was bad and had to be replaced. They sent the seat to an outside shop who removed the leather from the seat and upon inspecting the seat covering, saw first hand that a BMW leather seat is ALL leather and has NO vinyl. After owning too many BMW's to count, I can say that every one I have ever owned with a leather interior, had full leather seats and most had leather door panels. My '89 635i and '93 740iL that I had a few years back even had the center console covered completely in leather as well.
