: I thought all 5 series have the alumimum calipers. Is the different brake setup in the 540iA and 540i a misprint?
Perhaps the data you saw has a "typo".
I looked in the parts data that I have for the Euro versions of the 528I and the 540I & 540iA (I assume the NA versions are the same)
- here is a synopsis.
Front - 528 has different front callipers than the 540 (both 540's have the same part # )
Rear - all 3 cars have the same rear calliper part #.
Disks ( size - diameter/thickness in mm's)
Front - 528 is 296/22 mm's . Both 540's are 324/30 mm's.
Rear - all 3 cars are 298/20 (all same part #).
In inches the 540's disks are - front ( 12.8 x 1.18 in. ) & rear ( 11.8 x .79 ) - with single piston callipers ( cast iron front, aluminium rear ).
The 528's have aluminium callipers front and rear. I understand the 540's are cast iron at the front - but I have also had some conflicting input on this so I am not absolutely certain.
Hope that helps.
