I think the 540ia with Steptronic would be a nice alternative to a 6 speed if you want to shift for yourself, but also want an auto during those days when you don't. Especially during heavy traffice situation. I have an auto and like it. Plenty of power, and with the M technik susp./18" Schnitzer wheels, I am very happy with it. I went the the auto, because:
1. In case my wife had to drive it.
2. I got tired of the shifting when I commute in heavy traffic or in the city
If the Steptronic was available when I purchased my car, I would have definitely gotten it.
My 2 cents.
: Over the next week or so, I still have time to change my order from a '99 540iA sport (Steptronic)to a '99 540i 6spd. I've been driving stick for 18 years, most recently my '97 528i 5 spd, and of course I love the feeling of rowing the gears. However, having driven in Long Island Expressway and New York City traffic for 13 of those 18 years, I decided that an automatic would be smart and that it was time to grow up. I figured that the Steptronic would at least add some fun back to the driving experience.
: Of course I am having second thoughts. I've contacted some of you 540iA owners individually to get your opinions, but I've never posted this message on the 5er board because I know that vast majority of you are stick shifters.
: I would greatly appreciate opinions from both camps, particularly anyone whose driven the 540iA sport steptronic extensively. I'd also love to hear from 540i 6spd drivers who commute in frequent traffic.
: Bottom line question is this: Am I crazy to give up the stick because I find shifting in traffic to be very unpleasant?
: Thanks for your input.
