: I am trying to help my father get into slightly used 5 series, hopefully a 540i. Well, I sent him to the shop that services my M3 (they sell cars for their customers) to look at 2 540ia's. They also had a 95 530i with 37K miles on the clock.
: What are the major things to look at when buying a used 530i...I know nothing about this car. Any help would be appreciated.
Both cars are identical except the 530 has a smaller V8 and obviously is not as fast. I bought a used '94 530ia a year ago and I'm very happy with it - plenty fast enough for me. Check for missing oil pan bolts and resulting oil leaks around the lower oil pan. This is covered under the warranty. All 94-95 530s and 540s have potential for engine block problems but also have a very generous extended warranty to cover this problem. I got my engine block replaced for free on a 5 year old car - not bad. I'm also part of a mailing list with 20 other 530 owners. All appear to be happy with the car.
