Hallo Rune,
I have exactly same problem; I think itīs suspension and I can hear it clearly when driving window(s) slightly open.
I would descripe the sound like a piston or hydraulic with air coming in and out.
My dealer had NEVER heard anyone claiming that before and I let it be for the moment( have so much more different noise calims related to my 523i-97).
: In my E39 (60,000 km on the clock) there is a bumping noise in the front suspension now and then when running over small bumps. It is especially noticeable when running over small humps (upward bumps). The noise comes from the left side.

: Have anyone had problems with any bearings or bushings in the front suspension on an E39?

: Thanks for any help.

: Rune
