: In my E39 (60,000 km on the clock) there is a bumping noise in the front suspension now and then when running over small bumps. It is especially noticeable when running over small humps (upward bumps). The noise comes from the left side.
: Have anyone had problems with any bearings or bushings in the front suspension on an E39?
Yes, I had a problem on my 97 540iA with sport suspension. Was a metalic type of noise, that could also sound a bit like a rush (cavitation) of shock fluid - perhaps resonating the shock casing. Only happend on small bumps - like a manhole cover or when backing down a driveway curb. And you could only hear it if the windows were down (although after you began to recongnise it you could also hear it with the windows up.
Took them a year to find it - replaced brake carriers and shoes - not it. Finally fixed when the strut and shock were replaced. They do not know what the fault was - returned the components to BMW for analysis.
NOTE - this may not be your problem - but it was mine.
