I would recommend contacting a competent aftermarket car audio installer. When I was installing the CD changer in my 92 535i, I could have purchased an Alpine unit with an adapter, and was assured that it would have been a seamless install thru the factory head unit. I imagine the same thing would apply to the earlier cars. In the end, I got the factory version, because the internet price was the same, so I don't know from experience whether the other option would have worked as advertised..
