E34 530i Mech Fan Clutch Intermittent Locking (archive)

My 530's mechanical cooling fan clutch seems to be solidly engaged up to about 25 mph during approximately one out of every four starts from a standstill. It happens only when the engine is fully warmed up and after a bit of city driving. It's obvious when this happens as it makes a loud blowing noise on acceleration and engine power is slightly reduced. The noise disappears at 20-30mph or after a few seconds, whichever comes first, and power is restored. I can hear the fan winding down from high speed when it breaks loose.

Has anyone else noticed these symptoms or had this problem?
