Superchargers reliability is not really that much of an issue anymore(especially when you're talking about low boost applications like on BMW's)
Essentially they (the tuners) are using Powerdynes and Vortech's. The Powerdyne use's a kevlar belt inside to drive it and has self contain lubrication and ceramic bearings. It is VERY quiet.
The Vortech use's gears and draws oil from the oil pan through a additional line. It has a distinctive whine to it much like the gear drives of yesteryear.

For High horsepower and race applications Vortech is the King. I previously used 3 different Vortech's on my 89 mustang race car.
Again in a low boost (5-6 psi) applications
durability is not really a problem as you're not even beginning to stress either of these units at that kind of level.

Personally as I want to supercharge my BMW in the future someday I would go with the Powerdyne as I would not want to deal with any added noise.
