Regarding the use of higher wattage bulbs in the high beam units of the E39.

For what it is worth here is a direct quote from one of the BMW AG lighting design engineers.

Please do not use bulbs with higher wattage (80W). You loose the
homologation of the headlamp and the additional heat will destroy the
headlamp.
------------

That may be the "official line" or there may be some real issue.
