In a beginner's group, your 540i Sport will last about 4 laps before the instructor bumps your wife up because of the car's capabilities. On the straights, you'll leave behind most everyone else and in the twisties, you'll hold your own.

There was an E34 535i at the track this summer that was smoking his brakes after only a few laps. A combination of puny 11.8" rotors and 15" basket-weave wheels that allowed very little ventilation was likely the culprit. With your 12.8" rotors and open fan-style M5 wheels, brake fade should not rear its ugly head unless you're constantly braking from 135mph at the end of the straight (like some M3's that like to chase me).

Like Ted says, the 540i is a heavy car and it will eat up your MXX3's in the front. I managed about 4 track sessions before the fronts were gone. And while the factory pads will coat your wheels with a nice layer of dust, they won't squeal and don't require warming up like track pads.
