Please help, I've been trying to figure this out and I don't want to do anything that will damage my transmission.

I am looking for a detailed explanation of how to properly drive with the transmission in "M" (rather than "A") mode. I understand that upshifts and downshifts between 1st and 2nd gear will always be done automatically. Here are my specific questions:

1. If I am in the M2 (there is no M1) position, will the car just upshift and downshift between 1st and 2nd?

2. If I start out in M2, what happens next? Do I upshift to M3 then M4 then MD at proper intervals? Do I then also have to downshift?

3. The manual states that "the gear selected is also used for pulling away...with the selecter lever in position 3, you can pull away smoothly and no gear shifts will occur." Does this mean that you start in 3rd gear (or 4th gear if position 4 or D is selected)? That does not like it could be correct.

4. I guess my bottom line question is, does one drive in M mode the same way one would drive with a manual transmission except there is no clutch to depress (i.e., just let up on the gas and upshift or downshift)?

Thanks for your indulgence. I have been trying to figure this out for quite some time and the manual is not helpful to say the least.
