One more option to consider is the 3.5 liter conversion from the 2.8 liter, offered by Racing Dynamics. Horsepower goes to 296 and torque is also substantially increased. I don't have the exact figure but it is more than the output of the M3.2. Performance is quite similar to the stock 540, a pinch higher I believe.

I considered having this done to my 528 until I started adding up the costs. The motor alone sells for US $13,000 (installed). I live close enough to them that I could drive the car there to avoid any further shipping charges. Of course I would also want to upgrade the wheels, tires, suspension and maybe the brakes. Now I'm looking at a figure closer to $20,000.

This pretty well equates to the difference in cost of selling my car and buying a new 540 6sp. I'm somwhat conservative and need the comfort of factory warranties for purchases on this scale so the choice to me is obvious.
