Dan,

I put 6.5 speakers into the the kick panel. It's not a substitute for a sub but gives the front image a good foundation.

I made a alumimum bracket (almost as big as the kick with a 6.5" hole and 4 studs for speaker mounting) I cut off all the plastic bracing from the inside of the kick panel, leaving the mounting tabs of course. I then used silicone adhesive to bond the brackets to the panels. Dynamat the panel, and stuff some polyfill into the kick cavity.
