Well, I don't know if you meant to ask your question that way, but I'll answer the question you asked.

In theory, you could pirate the signal from the CD changer directly, by splitting wires. But, not only would you not get radio transmissions or tapes to use the subwoofer, but you also would have no volume control.

Also, for all who think that the amplified to line-level converter is a good thing, I'd caution you. For low volumes, it is OK. But, at higher volumes, the BMW stock radio is still pumping signal into what it believes is a speaker. Therefore (because it is a 4 watt-per-channel at 1% THD amp), at about 2/3 volume on the front end, the little BMW amp goes into mild clipping. No matter how good an amp you have in the back, that clipping becomes part of the input signal for your new amp, and the only thing you get is louder clipping.

So, for lower-volume listeners, the line-leveler is OK. If you are discriminating (read: anal) about sound like some (like me), take the BMW radio out, put it in a box to reinstall if you ever sell. Then get an aftermarket system, and do it the right way.

PS - Didn't mean for this to sound quite as snobbish as it turned out to.

Happy Listening

: I have followed the discussions about the sound improvement in E39; so my question for you who may know (especially J Cash) is :
: Is there any safe way to get a low-level signal from BMW trunk mounted CD-changer (BMW dealers/technicians say NO, You have to go for BMW expensive stuff) ?

: Reason for asking this is that I'm aiming to install a good quality preamplified woofer in the trunk !

: Installation may NOT, of course, interference with BMW data- and other signals and functions !

: Waiting impatiently Your contributions !
