Advantages/Disadvantages of 18" Wheels (archive)

I was wondering about the advantages and disadvantages of getting 18" wheels for my 1999 540iA (sport package) for summer driving. The 17" wheels that came with the car are fine, but I've put winter rubber on them (Pirelli Winter A210's) and I'd prefer to use my current 17" wheels for winter only.

What have people experienced in terms of the practical differences between 17" and 18" wheels on the street? If I'd go with the 18" setup, I'd probably use the slightly larger width wheel/tire combo in the rear (8" X 18" up front and 9" X 18" in the rear).

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
