Other day I went driving in a mountanous area. The angle was steep but my E39 (523) handled it well. Except I chose to put the Stepronic in Sport mode. I thought this would compensate for the steep climb. BZZZZt Wrong!
Later my Auto Trans warning lit up. Although the warning light shut off after I restarted the engine, which meant the transmission control restarted. BMW told me the car went on default mode because my "shifting" was wrong. It overrided my shifting choices.

Anyway the point is when doing steep and long (mine was 200 to 500meters at a time) climbs on a Stepronic choose 2nd or 3rd gear. This allows the computer to have less shift point choices and forces it to use low gears. This info the whole time was on the owner's manual (which I didnt read then.

Moral read the OWNER"S MANUAL!
