they are great driving cars but not built to the quality level we now expect thanks to the Japanese. However, most Japanese cars have the same drivability rating as a toaster (oh go ahead flamers, take your best shot!)
If you are really concerned about your car's health, you can buy an aftermarket extended warranty at any time before your original one runs out. I did this on my E36. Look in the classifieds of any issue of Autoweek. Don't use it to cover the small stuff, it's there for catastrophic failures (engine, tranny, etc.)
: It is a real dilemna. This is my first BMW (1997 540iA 'Sport') and I simply love driving the car. However I am not enjoying the ownership experience. I have had an ongoing series of problems, most of them very common ones, which have blemished the first two years with the car. During that time it has never been right. Yes, the dealer has fixed most of the problems under warranty (eventually, almost) but I am getting increasingly concerned as others start rearing their heads. We have some time to play with until the warranty expires but I may consciously trade "down" to something more in tune with the head than the heart!
: : Being a recent visitor to this board and being interested in buying a '99 540iASport I am very concerned about the range and number of annoying problems people are having with the 5-series BMW (eg. doors rattle, windshield fluid leaks, erratic alarms, poor premium hifi, fluid steering, flashing radio illumination and many more).
: : Is this car really worth $55,000 when you have to deal with the above ? Or are these problems just sporadic ?
: : Is this really the ultimate car ?
