: : I have a 98 528i. I was considering trading up to the 99 540i for the extra torque of the V8 engine. However, when I test drove a 540i last week I noticed that the steering feel of the recirculating ball was not as precise and direct as the rack and pinion steering of the 528i. I didn't think that the 540i was as fun to drive as the 528i. As a result of that test drive, I have decided that I will not trade in my rack and pinion for the V8.

: : Just food for thought.

: I suppose I just don't get it. I've heard these comments before but maybe my perceptions were not focused enough to notice the difference. Turn the wheel on a 540 and the car turns. Turn the wheel on a 528 and the car turns. What am I not seeing?

There are subtle differences in feel between l these cars, and different weight characteristics make their balance different too. Keep test driving. You will feel it....maybe takes tossing them around a bit. Tires, susp. setups, etc, all go to make a difference. Just driving around town? Then it could be a "who cares."
