Well, we got deeper into the car and found that the two channels coming from the radio are CONSTANT VOLUME! I.E. no fading, the volume control does not affect them, tone controls do nothing, DSP does nothing (I expected that). In effect it's a high level line output akin to what you'd get from a home stereo component.

What i've done is put in a Rockford Fosgate Symmetry for volume control, preamp and EQ functions. The control unit sits rather nicely in the tray below the cupholders, however it does not look stock at all and isn't pretty. I hope to have pictures up soon.

The SOUND you get is beautiful however... finally I can tie in all the downstream aftermarket equipment I want with no factory equalization mucking things up.

The only problem is, you lose steering wheel volume control and have to learn to use the Symmetry controls. We're also looking into modifying the Symmetry and tying it into the steering wheel.

For me, the improvement is worth it. My E39 now sounds better than any other car i've ever had, and i've had 7 cars with elaborate soundsystems.

As of now we're working on getting the phone integrated. The one bright spot in all of this is that the radio DOES mute when the phone is active.
