While the standard sound is not as comparable to the DSP, what the standard really lacks is the preponderance of bass. I equipped the standard sound with a subwoofer. THere is now more than enough overall sound, thump and volume to satisfy.

: I ordered a '98 528i last March and originally did not order the DSP because of the price. I then thought about how absurd I felt by attempting to save $1,500 on a $45,000 automobile. So, I had the dealer add DSP to the order and I have never regretted it. I am not an audiophile and I am NOT going to take my car someplace to put in an aftermarket system that may or may not interact with the rest of the controls. So, for me, it made sense. The sound is excellent for this "normal" person who only has a normal system at home; is it worth the $1,500 - probably not. But I LOVE my 528 and I love driving it and I would have hated myself if I had not gotten the DSP.
