I have no idea if it really causes problems, but when paying top dollar, I want to go through the break-in properly. As you point out, (most) dealers are _not_ concerned with the longetivity of the car - they just want to sell it. I always asked about the break-in limits when test driving, although one BMW dealer actually rolled her eyes at me and explained that "cars like these don't have break-in periods - drive it hard". This is B.S., of course.
I did a European Delivery, and if I hadn't I still would've done a factory order, to make sure that I could break the car in myself. You may not have to be as anal as I am, but I would never buy a car on the lot with, say, 150 miles on it. Those would be HARD miles...
One interesting thing to note: when I first sat in my car in Munich, the CAR odometer had about five less miles on it that the TRIP odometer. To me, this indicates that the cars must NOT roll off the production line with zero miles on the car odometer. They must give themselves a "grace period" and start at, say, -5 miles. Once the trip odometer rolled over at 1000 miles I couldn't show this anymore, although I did take a picture to prove it!
