: I have the same experience in my 98 528. When the passanger side locks, it can't be unlocked without unlatching the belt and retracting it almost to the back seat. Is this common to all E39's?

: : In my '00 528iT, the tensioners on the front passenger and rear seat belts seem to lock when extended and the belts can't be extended again (for example, to permit the passenger to move around a little) unless you first completely retract the belt. On the driver's belt, the belt tensioner locks the belt if it is pulled quickly (the way it is supposed to work in a crash), but if you pull it gently the belt will extend. That's the way it's worked in all the other cars I've owned. Are the passenger belts intentionally different on the BMW, or is this a question of the seat belt tensioners needing to be properly adjusted?
