This, of course, is possible, but, at least in Germany, the vast, vast majority of E39 that I saw (and they are as common there as the Camry and Accord in the U.S.) were 520i and 523i, with about two thirds of them "debadged". The idea is not to have a 540 underneath and be subtle, but to not brag about simply having a 2.0L engine underneath (at least in the majority of cases).
FYI, in a weeks time in Germany this spring the biggest engined E39 that I saw on the street (i.e. not at the factory) was a 528i, and I only saw one of those.
The rear of my car (540iA) did get a lot of looks in Germany/Austria, although I was never sure if they were impressed with seeing a 4.4L model or if they were simply shocked that I could be so stuck-up as to not have the badge removed!
