: Hi, all. I'm on my second E39 with the DSP system. On this car, I noticed some distortion coming out of the stereo. While washing the car a couple of days ago, I realized that it was coming from the try surrounding the subwoofers / amps / satellite_receiver [I have the nav system]. Something in there is loose, and resonating with the sound. It sounds especially miserable at the right rear door.

: Is there any simple way of getting in there to tighten things up, or is this something I should leave for the next service?

Funny you should ask. I had the same problem and of course, the dealer couldn't duplicate it. Thus, I did some investigating and found that the lower section of the subwoofer enclosure was the culprit. I took out the enclosure, removed the numerous screws holding the access plate in place and covered the inside of the access cover with Dynamat sound deadening sheet. Problem solved. Of course I now notice the smaller rattles and am in the process of chasing these down also.
