: : According to the Pacific BMW site, the 96 and above use the I-BUS.
: My mannual for model year 2000 say I have an AI bus for the stereo system. I am quite confused as the Pactific BMW site seems to indicate that any car after 96 has an I bus. Any insite would be helpful here.
: BTW what is the difference between the I bus and AI bus ?
Well I am just guessing here but it sounds like the lastest cars now have an addition to the I bus - perhaps a sub bus for the Audio (or auxillary).
What I do know is the 540's have an I bus (this bus originates with the high version of the instrument cluster). The 528's do not have an I bus.
The following items are directly connected to the I bus in the 540:
- Park Distance Control
- MID / On Board Monitor
- Compact Disk Changer
- Video module (not in North America0
- Navigation CD unit
- Telephone
- Audio Amplifier (Hi-Fi or DSP unit)
- Radio/tape unit
- Multi Function Steering Wheel Controler
- Light Control & Check module
They all communicate with each other using digital signals directly across that bus.
This bus goes directly to the IKE version of the instrument cluster where there is an 'interface" to the K, and other buses in the car.
On cars with the base cluster there is no I bus and all the above items are connected to the K bus (more common with other items.
Again I am guessing - if something requires the presence of an "AI" bus, then there must be special protocol on that bus that is different the the main I bus.
Need to talk to some BMW technician that is familiar with the latest version of the I bus.
Cheers
