: I would like to know how to remove the head unit from the dash on a 1997 E39 540i. Any help will be appreciated.

Fairly easy

- pull off the volume knob on the MID unit. underneath you will se a small torx screw. Turn that 1/4 turn to the left and that releases the latch on the left side of the mid - pull out on it at the same time and the MID swivels out and can be removed.

You will then see the 2 screws at the bottom of the tape face plate. Remove these and the tape/radio head unit just pulls straight out.

Cheers
