I will say this, there is a good size learning curve moving to the 540. I experienced many of the same issues that you talk about. I've had mine for about a month and a half now.
Seeing through the steering wheel is one. BUT, you can find a good view working with the seat and wheel positions. I use the seat memory with one for highway long trip driving, another for race mode, and another for around town. I'm kinda large as well, 6'2"... pleanty of room for me. I based my views/seat position on criticalities of the application, race, cruise etc. Important items I put in the view. Like I don't need to see my blinkers while racing etc.
The clutch is very difficult in my opinion (no flames please). AND, I concider myself an expert with manuals too. Launching from first is an issue sometimes, all others are easy and smooth. Once I get out of 1st, see ya!
One huge issue is how damn quiet the engine is! When I first got the car I was having trouble shifting not being able to hear the engine, must rely on the tach. Also, the car idles sooo low! I can't believe it, this adds to the 1st gear stalls occationally, very frustrating. There seesm to be a little delay when hitting the gas, this doesn't help either.
The 6 speed trany took my a long time to get comfortable with, and, I'm still getting used to it. Too many gears! I wish there was a indicator on the dash for what gear I'm in.
The stero is kinda lame... I opted for the stock stereo, it is okay, BUT, I would think that a much better one would be I a 57K car. I installed the CD myself, it sounds good. I moved from a 95 525i and the stero ROCKED in that thing, much better.
My fingers are crossed, NO problems yet, 1,600 miles. I have adjusted quite well as you will. I still need more practice which I will get =).
February I'm getting 2 mods, CAI and engine software. I hope it make it stronger. As we all don't EVER want to get whipped by a GS400!
