I have been in fog on several occasions, and severe Colorado snow twice which blinded me with euro lights, while fogs were the only thing I could use. Good strong fog lights can be a life-saver when it really gets tough. I have been able to drive with Cibie fog lights (older car) at around 55 mph. Faster was over driving the pattern.
: I had a meeting in Westchester County yesterday (just north of New York City), then drove home (to the Boston area). It was 188 miles, which I covered in about 2.5 hours in my '00 540i/6.
: I drove the Merritt Parkway (narrow, winding, hilly) to I-91 to I-84 to I-90 in everything from mist to drizzle to torrential downpours.
: I thought I'd share some observations, since that was my longest trip so far in this car.
: With the AC on (to keep the windows clear and dehumidify the cabin), and the cruise set at 70 or 80, I got 25.2 MPG. (It might have been a little higher, but I had the car in 5th for about 50 miles after refueling. It's so damn smooth and quiet that you can barely tell the difference.)
: The car was ROCK SOLID, safe, and stable at those speeds under those conditions. Some of the curves on the Merritt are posted at 45. Let's just say the 540 was able to negotiate them easily at "higher" velocities! Ahem.
: And I wonder if xenon headlamps will render fog lamps obsolete. On a couple of stretches, there were no cars and few lights, so I tried to see if there was much difference with and without the fogs. Almost none. The area that was a little brighter was just around the front edge of the car, a few feet wide, and extending probably only about 2-3 feet from the front of the car, at which point the xenon illumination took over.
: It was a delightful way to unwind after an 11.5 hour meeting!
