I actually did have the "gas cap" problem the first or second time I filled up. I took it to the dealer and they took care of it.
When it happened to me the light came on and stayed on, your situation sounds a little different. I also didn't have a rough idle. I would suggest going to your dealership to have it checked out. Better safe than sorry.
NY Chapter CCA
: As of last week, I became a proud member of the fraternity of BMW owners! I picked up a '00 528i. Yesterday, I gave the car a fill-up (Mobil Premium)for the first time since delivery. A sticker warned that the gas cap should be turned until a clicking sound is heard or the "service engine soon" indicator would become activated.
: I thought I had turned the cap properly after hearing the click. However, as I was nearing the end of my drive, two things began to happen. First, the indicator light came on. Second, the car began to idle roughly, which caused the car to vibrate quite a bit.
: I parked the car, and played with the gas cap a bit, satisfying myself that the cap had been closed properly. At the end of my work day, I drove the car home, without incident.
: However, this morning, mid way through my commute, the same conditions recurred. Eventually, after a few miles of driving, the light extinguished, and the car idled/ran more smoothly, without the vibration.
: Do I need lessons on how to close the gas cap, or is there something else going on that I ought to be aware of?
: Thanks for the help, and for accepting me into the fold.
