: I have a US car, built 6/98. I don't know about programming. Maybe I should be more specific, I have to have running lights (parking lights) on in order to use the fog lights, and is same with my '97 328i. I would consult with a dealer, sorry I can't help more. They worked that way on their own.

: : : Odd, I was impressed that my E39 and my E36 allow fogs w/out lowbeams. Most cars do not.
: : : I completely agree with you about using fog lights w/out fog. It is not polite, and most people who do it probably would be better off with stronger headlights.

: : As I have never owned a BMW that allowed for switching the fog lamps on alone, I have to ask an obvious but possibly embarrasing question: is this option a programming issue, or are you in Canada or Europe? As far as I know, BMWNA doesn't provide this capability in the States. Thanks for your answer, and excuse my ignorance.

: : : : I know the drive well. Sounds like it was fun, and I agree with you regarding the fog lights. They would be more useful in fog if BMW allowed you to switch them on seperatly. They do offer some additional useful fill and I guess they are impressive coming at you, but given that we can't run them without the main lights switched on, I consider them pretty much foofoo. BTW, something that I have always considered to be declasse is running with the fog lights on in city driving conditions on clear nights. Unnecessary.
