: anyone know where to get owners manual for a 85 528e?? I just bought it for my son. II. what would cause the rear to jerk when shifting gears and going over bumps? thought maybe shocks? please advise :)

You might want to put message on the E28 board (cause that is whaty that car is)

A dealer should still be able to order that manual.

Regarding the movement in the rear - it is probably the main rear subframe bushings - in those cannister units under the body just ahead of the rear wheels. When they begin to separate they get loose and allow the suspension subframe to shift forward and backward when you apply traction in either direction (changing gears does both).
When they get bad enough you will actually get some rear wheel steering effect - not good!

You should be cheking all bushing - and while you are down there check all the brake lines - especially the hoses between the tank and the filter/pump. Check with the pressure on (ignition on but engine not running) so as to see any weeping of gas through the lines.
