If you get 17's I have a feeling after a while you will regret not getting 18". I have 18's on my car now and I sometimes think that they are still too small and 19" would look better.
Go with the 18x8.5" front, and 9.5" rear. I would recommend 245/40 front, 265/35 rear. You REALLY want to put wider tires on the back b/c it looks really hot. In my opinion we do these wheels for looks more than performance, but you will gain better handling if coming from 16".
It is up to you galo-son, but I highly recommend the 18's.

: OK...I'm gonna do it, want thoughts/opinions from the wisdomed friends on this board. I've been a good boy to wife, family, God, et al...stock market's been good to me this past year...Christmas present in gonna be some AC Schnitzer Type IIIs with Dunlop SP9000's. Dilemmas as follows:
: - 17" or 18"??
: - Same width all around, say 8.5", or 8.5" front and 9.5 rears?
: The 17" to 18" decision will be based on just how much rougher the ride will be with the lower-profile tires needed on the 18" wheels -not a trivial concern on our fairly rough roads.
: The width is more difficult as one part of me says that if the car basically understeers -which it does, why would I want to add more rubber in the back? On the other hand, will the car look 'empty' in back with same 8.5" wheels all around?
: Those of you who have upgraded wheels similar to this, please describe your combination and opinions/what u have perceived relevant to my two concerns & many thanks -Galo
