all the comments here are reasonable; I'd like to add that we should generally stick w/ bmw's recommendations on rim sizes. Therefore, if you are going 18" (which I think you should, 5er body deserves 18), you should go 18x8 235/40 front, 18x9 265/35 rear, with your sport pkg suspension.
I've learned in the past years that bmw engineers dont come up w/ their recommended #'s for nothing; they know what they are talking about. why mess w/ an already near perfect suspension & rim sizes, thereby increasing chances of computer error or reduced performance?
I personally dislike the idea of 8.5x18 all around - I'd rather stick w/ 255/40/17 rear than 245/40/18 rear!!
: OK...I'm gonna do it, want thoughts/opinions from the wisdomed friends on this board. I've been a good boy to wife, family, God, et al...stock market's been good to me this past year...Christmas present in gonna be some AC Schnitzer Type IIIs with Dunlop SP9000's. Dilemmas as follows:

: - Same width all around, say 8.5", or 8.5" front and 9.5 rears?
: The 17" to 18" decision will be based on just how much rougher the ride will be with the lower-profile tires needed on the 18" wheels -not a trivial concern on our fairly rough roads.
: The width is more difficult as one part of me says that if the car basically understeers -which it does, why would I want to add more rubber in the back? On the other hand, will the car look 'empty' in back with same 8.5" wheels all around?
