: I looked at tire rack and saw their winter packages for the e39. I was wondering if anyone changed their wheels to one of the two that is offered for the '99 54oi sport. I am still worried about how the car looks. Here in Chicago the streets are plowed and salt is poured down almost always on-time, my problem is that I can't decide if I should just change my tires or get a new package for those really heavy snowfalls.
I got a package from Tire Rack for my '00 528i Sport. I got the 15 inch Borbet Type E wheels and Pirelli Winter 210 225/60s. I sprung for the alloy wheels because I figure I will have to look at them for several winters and the steel wheels are ugly. The Borbet wheels are not as beautiful as the 17" sport wheels, but they are a hell of a lot easier to clean. It hasn't snowed here yet, but on dry and wet roads the Pirellis have been quieter than I expected and ride very comfortably. I recommend the package. I dealt with Eddie at Tire Rack.
On my previous car, a '90 535i, I didn't use winter wheels, just had the tires changed on the same alloy rims twice a year. That was a mistake and I'll never do that again. The alloys can easily get damaged by being banged around having tires taken off and put on.
