: : I looked at tire rack and saw their winter packages for the e39. I was wondering if anyone changed their wheels to one of the two that is offered for the '99 54oi sport. I am still worried about how the car looks. Here in Chicago the streets are plowed and salt is poured down almost always on-time, my problem is that I can't decide if I should just change my tires or get a new package for those really heavy snowfalls.

: In my opinion, it makes sense to go to a 225/55/16 snow tire for the "99 540i sport. It's a better size tire for a snow tire than the wide stuff you have on there now. Of course, than means separate wheels, which is more $, but 1) protects your 17" wheels from the salt/snow/rock season 2) gives you the ability to keep your snow tires in the garage and wait to mount them when you see the first snow in the forecast and 3) saves you from having to have tires mounted and balances twice a year. That all said, I am not a huge fan of the steel wheels/hub caps approach that I know the Tire Rack sells. I just don't like the way they look (a friend has some). I looked around and found a set of 16" BMW wheels and got a great deal on them.
: As far as what the Tire Rack offers in their "packages", I'm not sure I would stick to their "suggestions" for wheels - my sense is that they offer whatever they have around at the time. Find a wheel you like and buy that instead.
I just bought a set of wheels from Tire Rack and I also got a set of hub caps from the BMW dealer to put on the steel rims. They look fine this way.
