For all of you that have 5 series automatics, I am very pleased to announce that a local DEI installer in Raleigh has successfully completed an installation of the Valet 552T autostart system from DEI in my '00 528i.

Once you have this (as I did in my Q45) you will never want to live without it again! The installers at Creative Acoustics did a fabulous job which actually took them three days. No other install had been documented in DEI's tech base, so they had to do a fair amount of trial and error. They only charged me $300 (plus one BMW part I had to bring in), so I hope they get some reimbursement from DEI for their extra time to debug and document the install. I went elsewhere for another install, and the people at that place just couldn't figure out what was going on. I finally gave up after five trips and had them pull their system out and refund my money.

The 552T has autostart and keyless remote. I had the system programmed so that lock and unlock is on one button and the autostart is achieved by pushing button one and two at the same time. I will go back next week to have them install the same system on my other car and will use button two to be the lock and unlock for that vehicle while both one and two will autostart that car also. DEI makes more complex systems that have additional alarm features, but I would NOT recommend them as far greater installation problems develop.

The wonderful thing is that I no longer need to have this massive BMW key in my pocket as well as the large key and the remote unit for my other vehicle. I sanded the sides of the valet key so that it is significantly thinner than before and use the valet key for the other car. Now I can warm up or cool down my car long before I get to it. It is also great if you have kids and want to leave the car running but don't want to leave the key in the car when you dart to the food store (or the BMW dealer) for a few minutes.

This system has an extended range antenna which will start the car from almost 500 feet away. They have figured out how to wire the Valet 552T through the BMW factory alarm system so that I still get the "chirp" when it is locked and unlocked. Also, they have installed it so that if I autostart without unlocking, the car will automatically disable the alarm to prevent the vibrations of the running car from setting off the alarm.

For those of you who are not familiar with the DEI autostart system, you CANNOT drive anywhere without using the key, and if the brake pedal is touched, the system shuts down. Also, the system shuts off in about 20 minutes is you fail to insert the key.

I have no ties with any of these companies. The link to the DEI product I used is at:

I still have no idea why every car doesn't have this system as a standard feature!? As you can tell, I think that it is absolutely wonderful. And hey, watch the heads really turn when your car starts all by itself!
