: Could somebody describe to me the "new" inner door seals that have been developed to silence noisey doors on the E39s. I heard some people describe them as having a felt covering. The reason I ask is because the local BMW dealer (San Juan, Puerto Rico) recently replaced the inner door seals of the two front doors of my 98 528i to remedy a noise problem. They did this only after I made a stink about it and complained to the Service Manager. I had tried several times to get the service advisor to change the door seals. I told him that I had heard on this board about the newly-developed rubber door seals.
: The door seals they installed look very much like the old ones. Additionally, they only made the noise go away for about a week. The is now just as loud as before.
: Supposedly they did this latest work according to service bulletin #51-08-98, which is described as "door edge protection molding wears out".
: Thank you in advance for your help.
it is not the "inner" seals. It is the outer ones - the ones you can see, from the outside, along the tops of the doors.
The newer style has a felt like knap finish on the surface that goes against the roof body.
It is important to keep even these new type clean & dry, since any buildup of dirt or wax in the felt like surface will cause them to creak just like the old ones.
