I had the same problem and reported on several trips to the dealer to fix it in the past month. The problem in my case turned out to be the wiring inside the foglight assemblies. Basically the short wire inside each foglight going from the connector to the bulb changes resistance in a way that the car's diagnostic system views it as a problem. This in turn triggers the fault message. Replacing both foglights with ones with correct wiring fixes the problem.

Chris,

: First problem with my 99 540/6 - Check control stating "Check Front Foglights" - They work. Yet each time I start the car - the same message. It clears a few seconds after turining the lights and foglights on.

: Anybody have a similar glitch?
