It maybe because sport pacakge has M5 steeling wheels now.
: According to the online ordering services, the sport and sport premium packages do conflict with the cold weather package with the heated steering wheel. Heated seats are available with the sport packages, but not the heated steering wheel. This seems to apply to both 1999 and 2000 models.
: : I have a 98 528 with sport suspension and I DO have a heated steering wheel (it is absolutely worthwhile). I don't exactly remember my ordering options but do recall that both the sports package and the heated seats/wheel option were separate and did not conflict.
: : : I think that if you can find a way to do this, there's a lot of us with E39 Sports (528 AND 540) who'd like to do the same.
: : : : Is there any technical reason why the heated steering wheel (part of the cold weather package on the 540iA) can't be put on to a 540i 6spd? I assume it's not an option because they want you to have the "sport" wheel, which doesn't do heating. Could I buy a non-sport wheel and with a little extra wiring have warm hands this winter?
